This page about the 1999 release of Tokyo Xtreme Racer, for the 2025 release, see "Tokyo Xtreme Racer (2025)".

Tokyo Xtreme Racer (東京エクストリームレーサー, Tōkyō Ekusutorīmu Rēsā) is the first installment of the racing game series of the same name; it is also known as Shutokou Battle (首都高バトル, lit. Metropolitan Expressway Battle) in Japan and Tokyo Highway Challenge (東京ハイウェイチャレンジ, Tōkyō Haiu-ei Charenji) in Europe. The game, developed by Genki and published by Genki (Japan), CRAVE+ entertainment (North America), or Ubisoft (Europe), was launched in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast video game console. Tokyo Xtreme Racer is inspired by the Wangan Midnight series.

The gameplay involves the racer challenging other rivals on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway in order to win money to upgrade his/her car (and eventually buy another car). There is a wide selection of Japanese-branded cars available for purchase, but since the game did not have the licenses to use the cars' actual names, they are referred to by the format "type-chassis number." Each car has a variety of custom parts available to buy and install. To see available cars click the link below.

Car List

The portions of the Shuto Expressway you could race on include the C1 Loop (sometimes known as the Kanjyo route) and the Yaesu route (the side road that bypasses part of the C1 Loop).

When the racer challenges a rival, a battle begins where both competitors have a set amount of SP (Speed Points) and when one competitor falls behind, their SP meter begins to deplete. The battle is finished when one opponent runs out of SP.

There are a total of 141 rivals in Tokyo Xtreme Racer; 133 of them are members of a rival team and the remaining 8 are Bosses that occur when you defeat a certain number of rivals. To see the rival names, teams, and their cars, click the link below.

Localization differences[]

  • The game's title varies by localization.
  • The cars in the Japanese version have Japanese license plates on them, and have different license plate numbers; by contrast, all cars in the US version have Massachusetts license plate 997XNE on them and the license plate cannot be changed.
